Beverage


Definition-

The word Beverage derived from Old French bevrage, from beivre to drink, from Latin bibere. Any potable liquid, especially one other than water, as tea, coffee, beer, or milk is Known as Beverage. Beverage can me alcoholic or non-alcoholic . 

Classification of Beverage-

Beverage can be classified in two types-

1. Non-AlcoholicBeverage- A non-alcoholic drink is one that contains little or no alcohol. This category includes low-alcoholic drinks, non-alcoholic wine, and apple cider if they contain a sufficiently low concentration of alcohol by volume (ABV). The exact definition of what is "non-alcoholic" and what is not depends on local laws: in the United Kingdom's, "alcohol-free beer" is under 0.05% ABV, "de-alcoholised beer" is under 0.5%, while "low-alcohol beer" can contain no more than 1.2% ABV. The term "soft drink" specifies the absence of alcohol in contrast to "hard drink" and "drink". The term "drink" is theoretically neutral, but often is used in a way that suggests alcoholic content. Drinks such as soda pop, sparkling water, iced tea, root beer, milk, hot chocolate, tea, Coffee, milkshakes, and tap water and energy drinks are all soft drinks.


2. Alcoholic Beverage- An Alcoholic Beverage is a drink which contain ethanol , a type of alcohol produced by fermentation of grains, fruits, or other sources of sugar. for example- Beer, Rum, Gin, Vodka, Whiskey, Wine, Brandy, Champagne, etc.


Classification of  Non- Alcoholic Beverage-

Non-Alcoholic Beverage can be classified into three ways-

  • Nourishment - Pasteurized milk, butter milk,  chocolate and cocoa drinks, milkshakes provides nutrients and help in nourishing the body.
  • Refreshment - Non-alcoholic beverage such as plain or carbonated water, lime juice, ginger ale and other bottled beverages, fruit juices are refreshing drink and are used to relieve thirst.
  • Stimulant - Tea and coffee help in stimulating the system and our brain is known as stimulating beverage.
  

Classification of Alcoholic Beverage - 

Alcoholic beverage can be classified into three ways- 

  •  Fermented beverage - All alcoholic beverages begin with the fermentation of a liquid food containing sugar. Fermentation is the action of yeast upon sugar in solution, Which breaks down the sugar into carbon dioxide and alcohol. The carbon dioxide escapes into the air , and the alcohol, remains behind, which thus becomes a fermented beverages. Cider, Perry and all types of wines like table wines, sparkling wines, fortified wines, aromatized wines comes under the fermented beverage.

  • Distilled beverage - Spirit is a potable alcoholic beverage obtained from the distillation of an alcohol containing liquid. The process of separation is called distillation. The liquid is heated in an enclosed container called a still. Brandy, whisky, rum, gin, vodka, tequila are the example of distilled beverage.

  • Brewed and fermented - Certain fermented alcoholic beverages like beer, sake, etc., are brewed before they are fermented, i.e., the mixture of grist(mashed cereals) and hot water is brewed to extract flavor, taste and aroma before fermentation.
